A Secret Within

I was once you, student of poetry,
And now, now you are reading me.
If you are observant I wish to show,
How poetry has reached me so.
Today you unlikely feel the words through,
But the art is becoming you.
And when the neighboring years settle in,
You will find these lessons within.

Whether by word, by note, by stroke---by thee,
The art in you lives to be free.
And when the business of life starts to wear,
     Your expression is always there.
A friend, a lover, a teacher---thyself,
     Existing in and of itself.
Take this secret with you where you may go,
It is all I should hope to know.

And when you are old and stop to reflect,
Ask if your art you did respect.
And see if sorrow or joy has brought you,
To look upon my art anew.
